About

Yasemin Y. Celikkol is an assistant professor in residence at Northwestern University in Qatar, with a joint appointment in the Communication and Liberal Arts programs. She is affiliated with the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ) and she is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the University of Pennsylvania. She also serves as reviews editor of the Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication.

Celikkol is a scholar of global communication with research interests situated at the nexus of communication, culture, and geopolitics. Her most recent work pertains to the geopolitics of globalized Turkish TV series, as well as fashion and hegemony, published in refereed journals such as the International Journal of Communication, Critical Studies in Media Communication, International Journal of Cultural Studies and Fashion Theory.

Meanwhile, Celikkol’s name is associated with baby sign language and positive discipline in Turkey, where she authored books and articles that were well-received by readers and the media. Her baby sign language book was the first book on sign language to be available in bookstores, a development appreciated by the Deaf community and the Hearing Impaired Federation of Turkey and the World Disabilities Union with whom she collaborated to further disseminate sign language in Turkey and beyond.

Celikkol’s pedagogical approach integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications, encouraging students to engage with real-world issues and develop a nuanced understanding of global communication dynamics. Celikkol has designed courses in global studies,  global communication, and media anthropology. She is also deeply committed to mentoring students, guiding them in their academic and professional development, and fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.

Celikkol’s academic journey is marked by a rich educational and teaching background in Bulgaria, the United States, and Japan, culminating in her PhD in communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania in 2021. She also holds an MA in communication and an MS in intercultural communication from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in language education and sociolinguistics from International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan, and a BA in politics from New York University. She was the recipient of a number of academic distinctions, including the U.S. Department of Education Foreign Languages and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) for the study of Arabic and the Middle East.
