Northwestern University in Qatar’s women’s basketball team won Qatar’s collegiate basketball league tournament on Saturday in a 26-21 victory over Qatar Academy. This is the first time the NU-Q women’s team has taken first place in either the tournament or in the league.
“This year saw us really grow as a team, with the strong leadership of our two team captains and some excellent new additions,” said coach Emily Wilson. “We put a lot of focus on learning to work together and trust each other on the court—when that happened, we got great results.”
Co-captain and senior Dana Atrach, who helped start the team in her freshman year, was awarded the tournament’s MVP trophy. Sophomores Maha Al-Ansari, Gena El Aker, and junior Sarah Sabry received all-star team awards.
The Wild Scotts, comprised of players from NU-Q and Carnegie Mellon University Qatar, won the men’s division tournament, beating Weill Cornell Medical College Qatar in the finals.
