Northwestern Qatar has expanded its academic advising and student success team to provide additional academic guidance and support for its growing student body.
“The academic advising team is equipped to provide students with guidance on the best ways to achieve academic success,” said Kathleen Hewett-Smith, senior associate dean and chief academic officer at Northwestern Qatar. “Students own their academic journey, and academic advisors are uniquely placed to provide solutions and to help the students make the most of it.”
In addition to the appointment of new academic advisers Miriam Khalil and Hanan Hindi, the expansion includes a new director of academic advising and student success, April Sanders, joins the university. Previously holding a variety of educational leadership roles, Sanders comes to Northwestern Qatar from the University of Utah.
In assuming her new role, she said that she is eager to support student success tailored to their individual needs and interests and to work on “providing our students with an integrated academic experience that ensures that they are engaged – both academically and as well as in student life – and are fully prepared for professional life after graduation.”

Along with providing students with guidance on how to fulfill their academic requirements, the academic advisers ensure that students understand academic policies and point them to resources that aid with academic progress and the successful completion of their degrees. Sanders will also work across departments to ensure seamless collaboration among teams supporting student life.
“Advising is about talking with students and gaining a sense of what they are interested in and what they want to do after graduation,” said Sanders, noting that, with the expanded academic advising team, students will be supported in aligning their interests with their respective academic paths and focus on achieving their academic goals.
