Northwestern University in Qatar has recognized 10 student projects in research, journalism, and media at its 2023 Media and Research Awards, an annual celebration of outstanding works and scholarly excellence.
Every year, students from across majors submit academic and creative projects produced both in and outside of the classroom to celebrate their exceptional work with the community. Projects submitted are presented to the wider Northwestern Qatar community and evaluated by a panel of judges ahead of the awards ceremony, where the winning project from each category is announced.
This year’s edition featured over 140 submissions—a record high—across ten main categories, including creative writing, documentary, moving images, journalistic writing, narrative fiction, research, and more. Projects submitted ranged from a report on Qatari youth’s Arabic fluency, a journalistic piece on racism and technology, a documentary on the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan, and projects tackling other pressing social, cultural, and political issues.

Shortlisted projects were evaluated by a panel of judges and industry experts from Aljazeera, Katara Studios, Qatar Media City, Ogilvy, and several other local and international media organizations, who then joined the students and the wider community for an open networking session to discuss their projects and ways to support their work both academically and professionally.
Highlighting the variety of topics and issues tackled by the projects submitted, Northwestern Qatar Dean and CEO Marwan M. Kraidy said that the work the students have done “means more than the awards and recognition they may receive. It is also a signal–a signal to the world–of the immense talent, imagination, intelligence, and excellence that is present here—in our students at Northwestern Qatar.”
The 2023 Media and Research Awards is one of many platforms enabling Northwestern Qatar students to showcase their creativity and scholarship. Last week, the inaugural group of the Global Undergraduate Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Global South also presented their research projects and findings in a community event celebrating their work.
