Sumitrajit (Sumit) Dhar, associate provost for faculty at Northwestern University, will address Northwestern Qatar’s 16th incoming class, the Class of 2027, as the 2023 convocation speaker.
A renowned hearing scientist, Dhar is a long-time member of Northwestern University, where he is the Hugh Knowles Professor of Hearing Science in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. In addition to being a member of the Northwestern faculty, Dhar also served as associate dean for research at the School of Communication, chaired the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern, and was recently appointed associate provost for faculty.
Since his appointment in the Office of the Provost in 2021, he has led faculty-focused initiatives and programs related to faculty support and development, overseeing all aspects of faculty matters, from recruitment, retention, tenure, promotion, and resource allocation to faculty policies and liaising with various faculty groups.

As the convocation speaker, Dhar will join Dean Kraidy in addressing the Class of 2027, one of the most competitive admission cycles in the school’s history, at the school’s annual convocation ceremony. Representing more than 30 nationalities, the Class of 2027 includes the author of the best-selling children’s book in Qatar, the lead author for academic publication in the Journal for Multicultural Education, and many others with a diverse skillset including editing, writing, researching, filmmaking, debating, content creating, and screenwriting.
Northwestern Qatar’s Convocation is held every year to welcome the incoming class following a week-long orientation program, which includes the annual Northwestern ‘March Through the Arch.’ The ceremony also marks the beginning of the new academic year.
