Christoph Lindner, dean and professor of Urban Studies at The Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment at University College London (UCL), joins Northwestern Qatar as the upcoming guest of the Dean’s Global Forum, taking place on January 16th, 2024.
The Dean’s Global Forum at Northwestern Qatar is a platform where thought leaders from academe, the media, the arts, and public affairs engage in community discussions with Dean Marwan M. Kraidy on enduring issues and pressing global matters and share insights from their career trajectories and life experiences. As the next Dean’s Global Forum guest, Lindner will join Dean Kraidy in a conversation on the future of sustainable cities.

Lindner is an interdisciplinary scholar of cities with more than 20 years of experience in higher education in the United States, the U.K., and across Europe. Since joining UCL as dean of The Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment in 2019, his work has focused on taking climate action while advancing educational access and equity, intercultural understanding, and environmental sustainability in the art and design fields.

Before joining UCL, he served as dean of the College of Design at the University of Oregon and, prior to that, was a professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam, where he founded and led the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Analysis, co-founded the Amsterdam Centre for Globalization Studies, and directed the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis. Lindner’s most recent appointment is as the new president and vice-chancellor of the Royal College of Art, starting in April 2024.
Lindner has published 15 books and many articles addressing the interrelations of cities, visual culture, and social-spatial inequality, including Aesthetics of Gentrification (2021), The Routledge Companion to Urban Imaginaries (2019), and Deconstructing the High Line (2017). He is a Fellow of both the Royal Geographic Society and Royal Society of Arts, and has been a visiting professor at New York University, The New School, University of California-Berkeley, University of Edinburgh, University of Freiburg, Queen Mary University of London, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and University of London Institute in Paris.
