Northwestern Qatar has announced the appointment of Alfredo Cramerotti as the new director of The Media Majlis at Northwestern Qatar.

Kraidy, dean and CEO of Northwestern Qatar. “With his depth of expertise and breadth of outlook, he is poised to elevate The Media Majlis as a distinctive space for aesthetic experimentation, intellectual exploration, and community engagement. I am confident that under Alfredo’s leadership, our unique digital museum will greatly contribute to our vision of NU-Q as a vital catalyst for evidence-based storytelling on the Arab World and the Global South.”
A cultural entrepreneur, curator, writer, broadcaster, and publisher, Cramerotti works at the intersection of contemporary art, verse, film and video, performance, photography, and mass media culture. His work also extends to online media formats and includes adopting blockchain technology, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and crypto art.
Cramerotti joins Northwestern Qatar from Mostyn, a public contemporary art gallery in Wales, where he led the gallery’s artistic programs as director for more than 12 years. There, he contributed to Mostyn’s reputation as a world-class international contemporary art gallery and expanded its artistic offerings, seasonal exhibitions, digital strands, and learning and engagements.

In addition to his work at Mostyn, he curated major exhibitions for biennials and institutions at some of the world’s largest artistic gatherings. He also serves as president of the International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT), chair of the Digital Strategies Committee of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM), and the editor-in-chief of the “Critical Photography” book series.
As the director of The Media Majlis, the first museum of its kind in the Arab world, Cramerotti will oversee the museum’s conceptual and operational aspects and advance its position within the cultural landscape of Qatar and the broader Arab region. “I’m excited to join Northwestern Qatar and help advance the work of The Media Majlis, which sits at the crossroads of art, media, and advanced technologies in an institution so uniquely contributes to knowledge production from its location at the confluence of cultures and continents,” said Alfredo Cramerotti, director of The Media Majlis at Northwestern Qatar.
Cramerotti holds a doctorate in communication design and photography and has published over 200 texts on art, media, and curatorial practice. His publications include Curating the Image: Notebook for a Visual Journey (2020); Forewords: Hyperimages and Hyperimaging (2018); Unmapping the City: Perspectives of Flatness (2010); and Aesthetic Journalism: How to Inform without Informing (2009).
Since 2019, The Media Majlis at Northwestern Qatar has been an interdisciplinary engagement space dedicated to exploring journalism, communication, and media and connecting with audiences in an ever-changing media landscape. As part of the school’s mission to deliver a holistic education, it explores themes across the media, culture, and technology landscape in its exhibitions.
