The Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ) is accepting applications for the #IAS_NUQ Global Conference and Workshop Grant. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least 12 months prior to the proposed conference or workshop.

Grant Description

#IAS_NUQ Global Conference and Workshop Grants enable the organization of scholarly conferences or workshops led by NU-Q faculty, globally resonant in their focus, scope, and speakers, and taking place on the NU-Q campus.

The conference or workshop theme must demonstrably contribute to the mission of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South, which includes promoting and producing evidence-based storytelling focused on the histories, cultures, societies, and media of the Global South. We particularly welcome applications that address at least one of our current research themes: (1) Genealogies and Epistemologies of the Global South; (2) Arab Media, Culture, and Politics; (3) Southern Digitalities; (4) Critical Security Studies. A full description of research themes can be viewed here.

Conference/workshop organizing committees should be led by at least one full-time NU-Q Faculty. We welcome applications for events that reach beyond academia to include practice-based, artistic, or activist communities, as well as applications that think creatively about formats, student involvement, and/or outputs. We are particularly interested in conferences or workshops that are designed to build a long-term research agenda and that will result in academic papers, edited volumes, or shorter digital or multimodal pieces. In line with #IAS_NUQ’s mission, we expect funded conferences and workshops to be multidisciplinary, multilingual, and contribute to knowledge and artistic production in, on, and from the Global South.

The funding range for this grant is between $10,000 and $30,000.

Eligibility

Full-time NU-Q Faculty who have not received a previous #IAS_NUQ Global Conference and Workshop Grant in the last three years. Faculty may not submit duplicate grant proposals for the Dean’s Conference Fund Grant during the same yearly cycle. Applicants must be in residence at NU-Q the year in which the event takes place.

Funding and Conditions

The Global Conference grant provides $10,000 to $30,000 to be used for conference or workshop costs (economy class travel, accommodation, catering, local transportation, etc.). In addition, IAS will provide logistical support to successful applicants, subject to pre-approval as part of an initial logistics-focused meeting with #IAS_NUQ staff. Faculty applicants should obtain a letter of support from their Program Director acknowledging that departmental administrative and/or faculty support may also be required for items outside of what #IAS_NUQ has agreed to provide.

Final funding approvals are conditional upon IAS review of key event materials (CFPs, speaker invitations, final program, etc.) and meeting reporting deadlines.

We envision supporting up to two conferences or workshops per academic year.

Criteria

The overall academic excellence of the proposal and its clear contribution to the mission of #IAS_NUQ are the two foremost selection criteria. Multidisciplinary proposals that: feature a globally diverse roster of prospective participants; integrate NU-Q students; include a detailed work plan describing a timeline and detailed responsibilities of each applicant; and that outline concrete scholarly or/and creative outcomes in venues; and contribute to long-term research agendas will be most competitive.

Reporting

Successful candidates are required to submit a brief progress reports three months before the event, one month after the event, and a final report once concrete outcomes come out.

Deadline

Rolling. Must be submitted at least 12 months prior to proposed event.
