The Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ) is accepting applications for the #IAS_NUQ Global South Research Grant. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least 6 months prior to the proposed project start date.

Grant Description

#IAS_NUQ Global South Research Grants support research by NU-Q Faculty that contribute to evidence-based storytelling focused on the histories, cultures, societies, and media of the Global South. Faculty may propose projects rooted in scholarly research, creative scholarship, or public-facing scholarship, as well as a combination of these.

Applications must address at least one of our current research themes: (1) Genealogies and Epistemologies of the Global South; (2) Arab Media, Culture, and Politics; (3) Southern Digitalities; (4) Critical Security Studies. A full description of research themes can be viewed here. Applicants should clearly state which theme(s) they will address and how the research would contribute to evidence-based storytelling in these fields.

Projects that involve collaborations with academic, artistic, or practice-based/activist communities outside of NU-Q, whether in Qatar, at NU Evanston campus, or at institutions based in the Global South are especially welcome. In line with the IAS mission, we expect funded projects to identify clear research outputs that are multidisciplinary, multilingual, and contribute to knowledge in, on, and from the Global South.

The grant provides between $10,000 and $30,000. A limited number of projects will be funded each year.

Eligibility

Full-time NU-Q faculty who have not received a previous #IAS_NUQ Global South Research Grant in the last three years. Faculty may not submit duplicate grant proposals for the NU-Q Fellowships and Grants.

Criteria

The overall academic excellence of the proposal and its clear contribution to the mission of #IAS_NUQ are the two foremost selection criteria. Proposals that: make significant and original contributions to evidence-based storytelling on the histories, cultures, societies, and media of the Global South; demonstrate approaches to knowledge that are grounded in deep expertise; are multidisciplinary and multilingual; outline concrete scholarly or/and creative outcomes in impactful global venues; and contribute to long-term research agendas will be most competitive.

Reporting

Successful candidates are required to submit brief progress reports three months after the start of the project, six months after the start of the project, and once concrete outcomes are finalized. We expect grant recipients to present their findings to the NU-Q community.

Deadline

Rolling. Must be submitted at least 6 months prior to proposed project.
