Caught between Nations: Film and the Danish Expeditions to the Gulf States

Project Description

This project looks at a few Danish films, from the late 1950s and early 1960s, as primary sources, along with published scholarship and primary documents in Denmark, to explain the often-fraught relationship between film, nation, and science in the Middle East. The production history of these films—as well as the stylistic choices they demonstrate—express the nature of this relationship especially well. It is not accidental that film should be at the center of this history; historically, it has been vital as both nationalist propaganda and anthropological evidence.
